[SOLVED] Grip crashes with specific Audio CDs – but why?

ARCH=amd64 PROFILE=default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde
I use Grip to code my Audio CDs to FLAC files, and with it worked perfectly. But with this very one CD it just crashes, regardless which song of the CD I choose to rip and code.

This is the output on the console:

Code: Select all

*** buffer overflow detected ***: grip terminated

I run KDE, and I find it quite strange that Grip simply vanishes without a notice. Only the console output is there, which I don't see off course when I start Grip from the Desktop.

WORKAROUND:
I turned off ID3 and ID3v2 tagging which is done by Grip after the files have been coded using flac.

The strange part is that it worked with all other Audio CDs. The one making trouble is: “Marilyn Monroe – Golden Hits”.

Anyone else having trouble with Grip?
Maybe I should report this to the Grip developers, but my guess is that they'd simply say that Gentoo builds are not supported by them and that I should use an official build or such. I don't know, but it could be a portage issue. So, here's my Grip specific USE flags:

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] media-sound/grip-3.3.1-r2 USE="nls vorbis" 0 kB
Cheers,
A.

I don't think flac supports id3 tags anyway? I never had any issues with it, but I stopped using it because it wasn't flexible enough for what I wanted to do. But maybe try an official build and see if you get the same crash?

Grip is dead.
I still use it, but I had to turn off ID tagging because Grip crashed on it. You can let the encoder tag the files by editing the cmd line that grip uses.

FLAC supports ID3 tags. That's not the point.

I like it best – not only for its simplicity. No other audio grabbing application is as easy to use. I use it even though my main desktop is KDE (and Grip obviously is more of a Gnome application).

What would be the command line options for the flac encoder for the tags? As far as I could find out, they would have to be manually coded using the --tag=FIELD=VALUE option.
It is much easier with oggenc which has distinguished options for Titel/Artist/… and everything.

Anyway, I was just wondering why only very few Audio CDs have issues, while others work just fine.
UPDATE: One more that makes Grip crash with active ID3 tagging: Depeche Mode – Violator.

Thanks for your answers.

http://gnuru.org/article/1160/ripping-flac-with-grip

I simply set the commandline for FLAC as suggested by the mentioned URL.

Mine is now: -V --best --replay-gain -o %m %w -T "ARTIST=%A" -T "TRACKNUMBER=%t" -T "ALBUM=%d" -T "TITLE=%n" -T "GENRE=%G" -T "DATE=%y"

Thanks for your help.
