Firefox won't show cups printers

  • Quote

Post by tabanus » Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:00 pm

Had this problem for a while, and just been ignoring it, so not sure when it first arose, but it's causing issues for me now...

The Firefox print dialogue (currently 3.5.8 ) only shows "Print to file" or "Print to LPR" The cups printers are completely absent. My other gtk apps print fine (Thunderbird 3.0.3, Gimp 2.6.8, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 ).

If I select "Print to LPR" the print is sent to the default printer, but I am unable to select any other printers.

The solution at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-70 ... inter.html doesn't help, and neither does re-compiling gtk+

I am not really sure, but maybe You have the wrong USE flags.

On my systems I can see my CUPS printers in Firefox (3.5 and 3.6).

My USE flags are alsa dbus gnome java libnotify linguas_de startup-notification

If I have to bet, I would put my money onto the dbus USE flag (and make sure it is USEd by cups as well).

Don't think it's the USE flags, as mine are much the same as yours. What version of cups are you using? I have 3 affected PCs using cups-1.3.11-r1, and one (unaffected by this problem) that's still on cups-1.3.10-r2

Do you have print.postscript.cups.enabled set to False in about:config?

That key wasn't there, so I tried putting it in and setting it to "true", but it didn't have any effect.

I've just installed mozilla-firefox, and uninstalled firefox-bin, and now it works, so I'm guessing the problem is buried somewhere in all that emul-crap that us x86_64 users have to put up with.

...and yet again, maybe it's not. I have a Gentoo PC that is a client of a binhost (the binhost being my main PC, affected by this problem), and the client is not affected by the problem. :?

I'm having the same problem with firefox-bin and thunderbird-bin (yes, on an amd64), and I don't want to compile the whole darn thing. Has anyone come up with a better way to solve this??

Don't know if that's still a current issue, but I had the same problem, except that the GTK printing dialog from multiple apps was just showing the two print options (as mentioned in the first post) -- firefox, opera and others. Re-compiling GTK helped for me. (emerge gtk)

Your
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/printbackends
should show four files when it's not working and six files (two libprintbackend-cups.la/so) after the compile. Restarting cups and the respective application should make your printer operational.

You don't have to use multilib. Using a /no-multilib/ profile cuts you off from 32 bit only software though, like err ... skype and err ... lightscribe ...
If you really need to use 32 bit only code, you can run it in a chroot or a virtual machine.
