Unable to mount Audio Disc

  • Quote

Post by crazymonito » Fri Feb 19, 2010 1:59 am

I'm running gentoo with gnome-light and I can read any data CD that I put in the computer. However, if I insert an audio CD I get an error that says:
Unable to mount Audio Disc. Location is not mountable
Also, if I go to 'Computer' in gnome, I can see that it is being detected as an audio disc. I can also open sound juicer and play the music from there, but it crashes as soon as I try to extract music.

I have added my username to the cdrom group and I get the same error if I log in as root and try loading the cd. Here is what shows in the messages.

Code: Select all

[ 283.399366] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
[ 283.399370] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1
[ 283.399373] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 2
[ 283.399383] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 3
[ 283.399385] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 4

[ 283.399390] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 6
[ 283.399392] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 7
[ 283.399394] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 8
[ 283.399397] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 9
[ 283.411072] sr 6:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 283.411078] sr 6:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 283.411082] sr 6:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
I should probably also note that I have the cdrom line commented out in fstab because gnome won't load it if I don't have it that way. Any ideas?

Ok, fair enough. I'm still having trouble with programs reading the CDs though. VLC gives me this error everytime I try to load a music CD:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda://@j'. Check the log for details.
I checked the log but no errors appear (unless VLC puts them somewhere else that I don't know of. Sound Juicer also crashes everytime I try to extract the tracks. When that happens, the log shows this error:
[147141.635745] sound-juicer[4535]: segfault at 0 ip 0000000000417b67 sp 00007fff343992d0 error 4 in sound-juicer[400000+2a000]
There's also still the error that comes up when I put the CD in...

Do you have cdda USE flag enabled?

Looks like I didn't have cdda enabled for Gnome. I added that to my use.conf and reemerged gnome-light, and now audio CDs appear on the desktop when inserted (thanks!). For some reason, VLC is still having the same issue though and it has been emerged with the cdda tag. I even reinstalled it just to be sure. Sound juicer was also having the same issue as before where it would play music just fine but crash as soon as I tried to extract music.

I decided to remove sound juicer and give Grip a try and it mostly works. Oddly enough, it's having the opposite issue. I can extract music from the CDs without any problems, but the music won't play (no crashes though).

There seems to be a lot of this trouble going around, and none of the other threads contain a permanent solution to the problem. The closest thing to a solution is to configure the file browser to automatically run the media player of your choice and pass it the correct MRL instead of the one udev reports, whenever a disc is inserted. For example, using Gnome/Nautilus, VLC player, and a CD player that's mounted to /dev/sr0 but the udev keeps trying to convert to the MRL "cdda:///sr0", I change the "Run when CD inserted" field on the Preferences -> Media tab in Nautilus from:

"Run VLC media player" (default)

to:

"Run custom command" -> "vlc cdda:///dev/sr0"

This works for autoplaying when inserting and removing the disc, though you still won't be able to open the disc using the icon udev adds to the desktop and/or Nautilus, as it will still try to open the malformed MRL "cdda:///sr0" when used.
