the recent migration to xorg server 1.6 and libxcb 1.4

hey peoples,

i just wanted to post an expression of thanks and congratulations regarding this update specifically, but also the increase in smoothness of many updates over the last couple of years. the reason for this is quality of communication, exactly when and where i need it.

the communication via portage, and using eselect to read the news items is really nice, and convenient, imho. the info, and the references to additional info provided me everything that i needed to pull all of this off in a matter of hours.

the only snafu i had, and it was my own creation, was the day of release i couldn't build xorg-server 1.6.x because vnc-4.x was pulling xorg-server 1.5.x as a requirement. made a decision to convert to tigervnc during the migration. should have did it, before the libxcb migration, and not masked xorg-server 1.6.x.

during the root out of libxcb-xlib.so.0* from the system, before i unmerged realvnc, i inadvertently built the new xorg-drivers package, against the xorg-server 1.5 abi. when i rebooted, x crashed obviously and i was like "wtf!?", but a quick read of the log, and a perusal of the modification times on drivers in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/*, made me realize i just had to rebuilt the individual driver packages for mouse, keyboard, evdev and ati again.

i might even explore the running of x without an xorg.conf, like i've been reading about ...

\m/ go opensource; go gentoo \m/

thanks again.

What is the correct upgrade sequence: libxcb before xorg-server or other way around?
Just making sure.

Definitely the libxcb upgrade first, followed by xorg-server.

Just a warning though, I may be having some X-related oddities with my mouse. It shuts down irregularly. It's a cordless mouse and it might be physical, but I'm still trying to figure it out. I haven't seen anyone post anything about a similar problem yet.

The 1.6 upgrade guide says:
Warning: Please do read and follow libxcb's upgrade guide before upgrading xorg-server, or you will risk badly breaking your system.

I just upgraded, and congrats to development team. This time it was done professionally.
The "eselect news" the best way of getting user attention.

I'm also extremely happy with the recent upgraded to X and kde. I've moved to tigervnc because it doesn't make a mess of kde4, as tightvnc does.
