KDE4: which version should be stabilized?

  • Quote

Post by cjubon » Wed Aug 19, 2009 7:16 pm

Now that KDE-4.3 is unmasked for amd64 and x86, I'd like to see a poll in this forums as to which version of KDE4 should be the primary candidate for stabilization efforts: KDE-4.2.4 or KDE-4.3.0?

I'd definitely vote for 4.3!

Could a moderator please be so nice do create a poll? Thanks.

mod edit: Poll added as reqested. Note that this is not an official poll in any way. --Earthwings

Done, with a voting period of 30 days. PM me if you need adjustments. You can get attention of a moderator by posting [topic=28820]here[/topic] btw -- that usually works better than hoping one of us stumbles upon requests in posts :)

I'm sure that it will be Kde 4.2.4 but Kde 4.3 has a lot of bugs corrections and also, I read that the Kde 4.3 has a lot of pretty new stuff too, so for stabilization, Kde 4.2.4 should be easier to stabilize.

Focus should be on KDE-4.3.0 really, 4.2.x is old stuff now. We shouldn't stabilize when upstream already forgets about it. 4.3.0 might take a bit longer but is worth the effort.

I also voted for 4.3 :)
Don't forget that the KDE Team has meeting today in #gentoo-meetings (freenode) at 19:00 UTC and we are going to vote about it.

4.3.1 has been voted as stable candidate.
To make it happen - all bugs blocking [bug=277868]bug[/bug] need to be solved.
Help appreciated.

The plan is to stabilize KDE versions just after they are released, probably skipping first patch releases (4.x.0). The main motivation is to keep up with upstream in terms of bugfixing. For example 4.2 svn branch no longer receives bug fixes and in most cases we don't have means to fix the code of our own, hence I see is as the most reasonable approach.

I've been using kde4 since it first appeared in the official portage tree masked for ~x86 and had to manually unmask it. The upgrade was no problem and now the last kde3/qt3 app has been upgraded they've now disappeared.

I dunno what all the fuss is about. 4.3 is real good though.
