kde 4.3 digital clock widget stupidity

  • Quote

Post by wumpyr » Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:32 am

Hi

On two gentoo systems now, after an upgrade from kde 4.2 to 4.3, suddenly the digital clock widget displays local time as UTC. But other parts of KDE, e.g. if you go to system settings->date and time, the correct local time is shown. What's up with this widget? this seems such an epic fail it couldn't be something that escaped testing.

my system is correctly set elsewhere, i.e. /etc/localtime is correct, TZ variable is set, date command works fine, ntp works correctly and of course, the widget showed the correct time in kde 4.2.

thanks

Do you have kde-base/ktimezoned installed?

No I didn't have ktimezoned installed and yes, that fixed it. Why isn't ktimezoned pulled in with 4.3 by default? surely it is required by most, if not all users who wish to display the local time on their desktop? (I note however local time was working fine without ktimezoned fine in 4.2).

thanks

I think it's part of kdebase/kdebase-meta.

It was on mine when I ran emerge kde-meta

Code: Select all

1249603473: >>> emerge (122 of 245) kde-base/ktimezoned-4.3.0 to /

hmm ok well I don't use meta packages - I was hoping it could be pulled in as a dependency for a individual package - whatever kde package is relevant here...?

If it's used and not pulled then it's a bug of course and should be reported.

I've got the same problem, ktimezoned was installed, /etc/localtime has the following settings:

Code: Select all

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.5K Sep 10 16:57 localtime
Under systemsettings, I'm able to see the timezones on the computer if I do

Code: Select all

kdesu systemsettings
So I'm looking at them as root, however, under systemsettings as a user, I cannot see any timezone except UTC.
I'm stumped, anyone have an answer to this?
Thanks!

Bump again! I tried wiping my /home/user/.kde directory, didn't help. I suppose if I don't get any help, I'll have to re-emerge everything and see if I get going, perhaps after an uninstall of the kde 4.3 ebuilds and wiping the .kde directory again... Dunno, I really don't have time for that right now... Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

kde 4.3 digital clock widget stupidity - Fixed!

  • Quote

Post by cctsurf » Tue Sep 22, 2009 10:03 pm

I Finally tracked this down, I was attempting to fix another issue I've had for a while, that gwenview wouldn't even show jpg files, and ran into the fix!
It was a permissions issue, I found that almost all of the directories in /usr/share/kde4/services/ had messed up permissions. I'm not certain how they ought to be set, but I set them all to 755, as was noted in the forum I found a similar problem fixed. http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=19 ... f&start=10
Upon a quick look, I found that this affected my screensavers, gwenview, and I don't know what all else
Could someone post a normal

Code: Select all

ls -ld /usr/share/kde4/services/*/
So that I can change my permissions on those directories if they are incorrect? Thanks!

I found too. The file ~/.kde4/share/config/ktimezonedrc doesn't have the right permission.
