Fluxbox 0.9.5 out

This is another dev release, but you can see how far it is coming along... Just wanted to share my happiness with everyone else...

Naturally, right when I finished compiling the newest breakmygentoo ebuilds for gnome, I have ANOTHER thing to compile... I hope I can get outside today to see "the sun" :p

Nothing super new:
improved iconbar, search path for theme pixmaps, configurable toolbar height, more theme items.

Tho they fixed some things like removing rounded corners from xmms and a few other things.

Doesn't mean i wont grab it right after i press this submit button!!

Tho it does feel more like christmas when you skip a whole tonne of releases then suddenly realise your behind - then when you emerge it theres like 50 new cool features. :-)

installed it -- I'm back to 0.9.4 -- had 0.9.5 had some major issues on my machine..

-styles wouldn't get implemented properly (ie: influx)
-popups were more difficult to close once invoked
-crashed twice in five min -- needed to reboot
-restart crashes flux and X

Hmm... it does seem like a very minor update. I'll give this a try once I get the time though, yay!

I'm having a lot of the same problems chefakito was. I have been using it all evening and it crashed once. That is when I pressed the "restart" button in the menu... which has now become the "crash X now" button. My theme is also having problems. I am going to stick with it for a while and give it a good testing. Definitely still usable. And some of the new features are nice. Just be watchful of the Reboot, er, I mean Restart button. :)

they have updated the tarball: fluxbox-0.9.6pre1.tar.gz

Would be nice to have an ebuild for that...

The last time I tried the development branch of fluxbox (0.9.4 I think) it nuked all my lovely customised 0.1.14 configuration files in ~/.fluxbox.

I'm not sure if this behaviour still occurs, but never underestimate the power of backups... :)

Im pretty sure it wasn't in 0.9.4 but the iconbar thingo down the bottom now looks different and has the actal small icons of each of the program displayed... which is kinda neat - tho reminding me waaay to much of windoze.

Just received this email from Henrik Kinnunen (fluxgen) on the fluxbox development list:
Because 0.9.5 had a few serious bugs, I'll release 0.9.6 in a few days.
Until then there's a 0.9.6pre1 package out, with the bug fixed and a new
feature.
Hopefully we'll see an ebuild for this very soon.

whoa, I see a 'taskbar' and I'm loving it. did I somehow miss this in 9.4, or does it fall under 'improved iconbar'....

this makes multitasking without losing windows possible!

I've been using 0.14 with the remember patch for about 6 months now and its never crashed once. I don't think I could put up with a development version crashing or being buggy.

The new features look fantastic though. To make 0.14 perfect for me I would add:

all windows available on the icon bar
window snapping
always on top / layers
keyboard menu navigation

All of which I believe are now in the development version. Something that would be nice is dynamic menus and action files like waimea has.

0.9.6pre1 is out - I've downloaded it but I'd like to use portage to install - to make it easy to go back to the other version if I have to

How do I do this - can I just edit the ebuild?

Is it possible to have both 0.1.14 and 0.9.6 installed at the same time? If so, how do I switch between them?

Hi !

Yes, you can install both versions, you just have to maintain two /usr/bin/fluxbox executables (so be careful with install or emerge fluxbox)

Well, it doesn't work for me :(
Even when I set the toolbar to 'All windows' mode it only shows the windows for the current workspace

It used to worked in 0.9.4

OK - the default style in 0.9.6 is horrible, but I don't have anything in the menu to change it with.

How do I specify where fluxbox picks the styles up from?

Styles are specified by the session.styleFile property in ~/.fluxbox/init.

If you haven't done so already, run

Code: Select all

fluxbox-generate_menu
to generate a 0.9x menu listing, which should include both system styles and users styles in the menu.

I have invisible fonts everywhere...
In the menu for instance, the entries are there but I can't see the text. I tried changing themes, but no luck.... Any ideas?

In 0.9.6pre1 it runs the startup script twice for me - not so good :(

I guess it is development though...
