Hey, done a lot of searching on fluxbox, and it seems i'll be going that way tomorrow. Something caught my eye, though: USE variables. As a complete newcomer to flux, will i need to worry about adding "-kde -gnome" or any other flags to, er, make.conf is it? I'm not quite sure about which apps i'll be using, most likely mozilla/opera, xmms, xine, and gaim or equivalent.
Seven years of screwing my PC's up, and here I am, still standing
One of the nice things about Flux is its tiny size -- if you decide later on that USE="-bob" was a mistake, you can just change it and recompile really quickly with "bob" in make.conf. It's not like recompiling the whole of Gnome or KDE, thankfully.
Incidentally, if you're not comfortable messing about with make.conf yet, then try using ufed; it's basically a simple interface to select or remove USE flags. It's in portage.
It is not like the world will end if I take the day off from eating worlds.
Compiling flulxbox with USE="kde" will just add a tiny code to handle kde tray applications - with this option enabled they can dock onto the fluxbox slit as they would normally dock onto kicker.
Compiling fluxbox with USE="gnome" will add support for gnome hints - i.e. you can tell xmms to stay sticky or/and ontop...
Adding this options is a good idea.
There is no difference with size (tiny) or how fluxbox performs with/without gnome, kde enabled - and you never really know when you need it
