Installing Windows Apps on Gentoo

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Installing Windows Apps on Gentoo

  • Quote

Post by shgadwa » Sun Mar 15, 2009 10:09 pm

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum...

I'm curious as to what I would need to install or configure to be able to run the most amount of Windows Applications on my linux computer. Of course, get wine. Got that. But, it does not always work with some... is there any patches for the linux kernel, anything to add to wine (I need to install wine tools, I know that much)... or any other such recomendations to beef it up?? As for the Codeweaver's version... It seems to work worse than wine itself for me, I'm not paying them for it. :?.

Thank you.

belikeyeshua,

Check out winehq.org for a database of programs that run under wine and how to set up wine.

If you need lots of windows programs, you should really be asking about the Liux equivelents.

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Certain apps need some hacks to work (winetricks will be helpfull - if you don't know what that is, then you need to read on using wine. I think they have a wiki.) and others simply won't work (for now).

And yes - there is plenty native applications that are great to use. Please list the apps you want to use (and what it is that you like in them most).

use a virtual machine

First, try to find a Linux application that is afunctional replavement. There are 26,000 packages available for Gentoo, and many more programs that have not yet been made into packages. Next, check the Wine database to see if your windows app can run under Wine.

Some windows programs just don't run under Wine and do not have Linux equivalents. One example is TurboTax. If you must use a windows program that canot run under wine, you can run a virtual machine and run a copy of Windows in the virtual machine. This assues that you have a legal set of Windows installation disks.

Your choices of virtual machies incluse VMware, Xen, and KVM. KVm is probably the best chosec if you have a modern computer (AMD, Core2, or Core i7.)
After you creae your virtual machine and load it up, you can run any Windows program. Most modern 3D real-time games will run poorly. everything elese will work just fine.

Helpful, would be to post what applications are you used to using in Windows that you would like to use in Linux.

Working with responses from the perspective above, you'll find(at least in my experience) that there aren't any reasons for you to use Windows again. Cutting the cord, so to speak.

I'm happy using virtualbox for my XP with 3DS Max and such stuff. And it has 3d acceleration (just opengl for now, but d3d is coming).

I am trying to install 3Dmark06 but has ran into problem. When trying to run it i get:

Code: Select all

C:\windows\data\skins\pro\message\message.txt:
No such file or directory
I have tried to manually create the directories and file but no luck so far. Suggestions?

What really gets me pussled is that when I look in my Windows-computer I don't have that file. I have one for 3DMark 03 though...

Thanks in advance!

Ok, I solved that one. Next issue is "pixelshader". Here is a page about that:
http://www.wine-reviews.net/benchmarks/ ... patch.html

I have wine-1.1.7. According to the text on the page i linked to above there is no need to apply the patch above wine-1.1.3. However, they do not mention Gentoo...

So how do I solve this?
