Can't login as regular user

I can't get my Gentoo install to let me login as a normal user. I created a new user with

useradd gentoo -d /home/gentoo -G users,wheel -p gentoo

. I can su to the new user as root, but I cannot login with it, either at the command line or in KDM (even though KDM shows my user in the sidepane). I am sure it's something really basic, but I can't seem to figure this one out.

passwd <username>
<newpassword>
<newpassword>

I never had much luck with specifying the password directly.

You might also think of adding -m next time when creating a new user (creates the home directory).
