When connecting to bugs.g.o I get a SSL error over HTTPS:

Code: Select all

Secure Connection Failed

bugs.gentoo.org uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted.

(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

    * This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.

    * If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.
I just thought i should notify someone

in other words one way to get rid of this 'error' is to import the Root-CA certificate of cacert.org into your browser.

- download http://www.cacert.org/certs/root.txt
- import into browser
- done

From now on all certificates issued by CAcert are considered as valid and trusted as e.g. Thwate/Verisign/AOL-certs are.

alternatively install app-misc/ca-certificates-20080809
ca-certificates (20080809) unstable; urgency=low

* New cacert.org.pem joining both CACert Class 1 and Class 3 certificates.
This file can be used for proper certificate chaining if CACert
server certificates are used. The old class3.pem and root.pem
certificates are deprecated. This new file could safely serve as
a replacement for both. (Closes: #494343)
* This also reintroduces the old name for the CACert certificate,
thus closing a long-standing bug about its rename to root.crt.
(Closes: #413766)
Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself

Not sure what's wrong, but I have ca-certificates installed (20090709, not 20080809) and I'm still getting the error. Manually importing the certificate worked fine, but shouldn't the ca-certificates ebuild have worked?

Yeah the latest ca-certificates ebuild does not help. Firefox 3.5.3 getting an untrusted cert warning.

cacert.org:

I guess you get what you pay for. :-/
