Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.
When I play MP3 files, the sound skips frequently when any other system activity is happening and sometimes when there isn't much going on. I'm using Amarok 1.4.9.1-r1. It says the engine is xine (there are no other options), output plugin is ALSA.

I just tried other players and it still happens.. hmm. it is onboard audio, maybe it is just crap? Didn't have this problem on my old & slow machine, but that doesn't mean anything.

What version of alsa-driver(or if it's built in to the kernel
I'm having a similar problem, also Nvidia, but a newer chip - GeForce 8000M / MCP78S. The sound chip is really a Conexant High Definition Audio 221 (SmartAudio).
SNAP, CRACKLE, POP! Especially when only playing a tune. Jiggle the mouse or run an emerge and it clears up, but then the system occasionally pulls a temporary hang. I've tried in-kernel, modules and ~x86 alsa-driver. I even installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (beta). They use 1.0.17, but no special modprobe options that I could find. No sound issue there, but there is with Hardy Heron. It's also crackles.
It's gotta be some simple module parameter. I've tried the position_fix=0,1,2 and 3. No help there.
The debug info is greek to me. What ever ya need, I'll post. HELP!!!!
Only one problem, if you switch to 2.6.27-rc6 (vanilla sources) and you are using nVidia graphics, you'll have to use the nvidia beta driver 177.70. It works well enough, but you have to issue some commands to increase 2D performance.
Hi
I just found out that OSS is nowadays very good audio system for linux. Installing it solved _all_ of my audio problems in Linux. You could try it, installation instructions can be found here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Howto_OSS4 (as you can see, installation is trivial). It is just great, I love it!
