Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Xine crashes/hangs consistantly

I am having an extremely annoying crash with Xine when I try to play certain mp3s, making amarok crash or hang every few minutes. I have confirmed that it is for sure a xine issue.

I made a backtrace of the xine gui crashing on an mp3: http://pastebin.com/me99a724
This particular crash was just opening that mp3, although sometimes it will open it and won't crash until midway into the song. Either way I see a lot of X_meta_info_* in every crashlog I make. The error is always proceeded by a glibc free error like this: *** glibc detected *** xine: free(): invalid pointer: 0x08e544f0 ***

Some mp3s play without issues, but it almost always crashes after a few are played. xine-lib is built with FEATURES="splitdebug" and USE="debug". Any insight into this would be greatly apprieciated, this is driving me nuts.

Another gentoo user is having the exact same issue as I am, and they filed an upstream bug here: http://bugs.xine-project.org/show_bug.cgi?id=130

It looks like the xine bugzilla is kinda dead though so I'm not expecting anything. I believe that something has broken in the tree, but I'm not sure what. If anyone else sees this issue, please reply so we can figure out what happened.

It would be awesome if a gentoo dev could look into this.

I really need help with this!

This is getting so bad that I am really considering switching away from Gentoo to Debian, though I still love Gentoo despite these sorts of issues. I MUST have a functional amarok and for some reason I cannot switch my amarok engine to gstreamer. The option isn't even listed. How can I get that options to appear? I didn't see any USE flags that looked promising.

Thanks

OK I finally found a solution to this. It turns out that versions >xine-lib-1.1.8 are affected by the bug, 1.1.8 is not. Downgrading fixed it, but I'm not sure how much longer that will remain in the tree.

This issue is fixed in xine-lib-1.1.14-r1.
