[SOLVED] SATA detection problem - VFS error

  • Quote

Post by pg » Mon Mar 31, 2008 6:03 pm

Hi there,

I am getting very similar error like in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-682202.html
The error is

Code: Select all

sda driver: sd
sda1
sda2
[..3..4..]
sda5
sda7
sdb driver: sd
sdb1
sdb2
sdb3
....(4,5,6,7,8..)
sdb9
No filesystems could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 msods vfat ntfs
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,19)
All my partitions are Reiserfs and reiserfs is compiled as built-in as well as AHCI and SATA drives support.

Thanks for any help

that's strange - have you tried any old working-with-sata kernel config?

I encountered the same problem on that kernel try emerging the older kernel, I used the older 2.6.20 and I have successful installation. If your box is server, use the hardened kernel... This is kernel is built for server it has SATA2 support.

nocph: I ve tried both hardened and gentoo kernel 2.6.20 and I got the

Code: Select all

sda driver: sd
 sda1
 sda2
 [..3..4..]
 sda5
 sda7
 sdb driver: sd
 sdb1
 sdb2
 sdb3
 ....(4,5,6,7,8..)
 sdb9
No filesystems could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 msods vfat ntfs
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,19)
If you'd like here is my hardened kernel's config http://pastie.caboo.se/174027

I ve tried to run Gentoo LiveCD and it hangs when try to load AHCI module.
My BIOS is set to AHCI.

Coul this be a problem of filesystem rather then harddrive driver ?

Remember to enable RAM disk support

Code: Select all

[*] Block devices  --->
    <*> RAM disk support
    (16) Default number of RAM disks
(8192) Default RAM disk size (kbytes)
(1024) Default RAM disk block size (bytes)

That is a device driver on kernel...

On you LSPCI output I notice that your SATA chipset is ATI... Go to ATI section, goto SATA and Device Driver on the kernel.... Try to add all ATI SATA driver... and recompile your kernel...

And also add notHerbert post...

OK, I do apologize for this late, late reply, but to anybody who is dealing with similar problem:

Try hardened version of kernel. It's solved my problem.

Thanks, for help.
