Synergy at startup

What's a/the way to startup synergyc at the start of X? I put a "synergyc w.x.y.z" at the beginning of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, but it feels a bit weird with all the stuff already in there :)

Add the line for your user's ~/.xinitrc

That would be a good idea for every other application, but since synergyc allows me to throw away my mouse and keyboard and use the ones attached to another PC, I need this to start with X, NOT when a user logs in.

Unfortunately, I don't believe you can have synergy start with X. IF you check their website, I believe it is mentioned in their documentation.

One of the limits of a truly multiuser system.

Another option, is to have your PC automatically log you in and I tend to use the Systems menu in gnome (look for the session entry) to configure startup programs. You should also be able to access your login screen settings where you may be able to specify auto login.

I know it works on an Ubuntu system but unfortunately I am rebuilding my Gentoo system so I can't comment if this applies still there.

Yes you can. To start with gdm put these lines:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/killall synergyc
sleep 1
/usr/bin/synergyc w.x.y.z.
in the file /etc/X11/gdm/Init/Default right before "sysmodmap=/etc/X11/Xmodmap"

Next file you will have to create if you don't have one: /etc/X11/gdm/PostLogin/Default

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/killall synergyc
sleep 1
Next file is /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/killall synergyc
sleep 1
/usr/bin/synergyc w.x.y.z
Put that right after "rh6sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/Xmodmap" and before the line "# merge in defaults"
Your sig is better than my sig.
