Mplayer, scratchy, crazy audio and stuttering video

Hello, and thanks in advance for the help. I am relatively new to Gentoo, and am only slightly more intelligent then a well bred monkey, but here it goes... I am having problems with mplayer. When I play movies, I get a really fast stream of

[mp3 @0xd3bfc0]Header missing skipping one byte

The audio playback is silent except for seemingly random very high pitched screeches (maybe it is being played back MUCH MUCH faster?)

I did some research on the intarwebs and in the forums here and tried a few different things,

re-emerging mplayer
re-emerging mplayer with mad mp3 decoder support
emerging xine-lib with the "mad" USE flag.
rev-dep-rebuild
editing mplayers config to force it to use ffmpg
also i figured because I have and AMD64 chip, I tried mplayer-bin w/ the win32codecs and got the same error messag

Some files actually crash after a few seconds, giving the following:

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode_audio
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

I should I suppose also mention I am using ALSA, what other information would be useful?

AHA! Well, I was screwing around some more unmerging and emerging, and I forgot to log out of root before I ran mplayer... playing video works fine as root, just not as user. This is probobly pretty simple to fix, i imagine I have to add users to a group or set permissions on something, but i am a newb and bit befuddled.

Another note, playing the movie with -nosound fixes all the errors.

Any ideas?

This may be a problem of permissions or a bad configuration hanging around. You may want to
- check mplayers output for permission warnings (or post it here, but please cut some of the repeating errors  )
- use another user or move your .mplayer directory

I'm bouncing on this issue. I have the same :

While reading any non-mute MPG file I got the following :

Code: Select all

MPlayer SVN-r24130 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU - M 1200MHz (Family: 6, Model: 11, Stepping: 4)

Opening video filter: [scale]
The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
Try appending the scale filter to your filter list,
e.g. -vf spp, scale instead of -vf spp.
VDecoder init failed :(

[mp2 @ 0x86de720]incomplete frame
[mp2 @ 0x86de720]Header missing skipping one byte.
Which the last line repeated infinitely.

I don't have this problem with mplayer & :
-mp3's as root only....:) (else I get some Invalid New Backstep xxx), but no audible impact.
-asf
-avi
-wmv
whatever has sound but is not an MPG.

I'm using ALSA.
I rebuilt mplayer many times, added mp3 and X support.
Revdep-rebuild as well.

here are more info :

Here is a workaround that worked for me :

Code: Select all

$ mv ~/.mplayer ~/.mplayer.old
if this still doesn't work, there is a global mplayer in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
Oh look... is it a stockbroker? Is it a quantity Surveyor? Is it a church warden?
NO! It's Bicycle Repair Man!

Ok that is great !!!
I found that the error was :
afm=ffmpeg.

I swapped it to afm=mp3lib.
That works like a charm.. Many thanks !!
