Installing on a drive attach to a Tekram DC-395UW

Post by SiD3WiNDR » Wed Jun 26, 2002 3:52 pm

Hello,

Is it possible to install Gentoo with a Tekram DC-395UW scsi controller?
I tried modprobing just about all modules in the /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/scsi but no luck..

I think this card utilizes it's own chipset (Tekram), not NCR or Symbios...

On the tekram page i can find some files for distro's like suse, debian, etc.. but not gentoo, and i don't know what to copy/compile/probe to get this working..

Thanks for any suggestions,

when you boot from the installation cd does the pci detection see the card?...i have two symbios cards one is a tekram the other is a raid card that uses the 53c1010 chip...both show up but only the tekram will work in gentoo...although both work with the same driver in free bsd...gentoo is kinda funky i think

Nope, it's not found in the PCI detection either.

I haven't tried getting this to work on another distro, nor on BSD..

I'm planning to check if SuSE supports it, as soon as I get my disk set back.

well if pci doesnt see it thats not good...i see that tekram has a couple of modules...dc-390(T) and then an Am-XXX something ....try loading free bsd and see if it detects the chipset so you can modprobe the right driver if its actually present on the install cd...if not you could build an initrd image and load it onto the install cd....i saw a post about how someone had done it using -loop

Not in kernel

The module for the DC395/315 scsi board is not in the "standard" kernel yet

You could find it here: http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/dc395/

But now your problem will be to install it. The only way to do it will be to use another distro to start your gentoo install.
Check if Suse support it, or install temporary an ide drive where you can install a minimal distro, and then build your gentoo kernel with the tekram patch.
