x server crashes with any gnome application

  • Quote

Post by aitch » Sun Oct 14, 2007 1:51 am

hey, I've recently been having some major problems with gnome applications.

whenever I open one up, like gnome-theme-manager for example, it crashes whatever DE I'm in and kicks me to this perpetually reloading X screen where my cursor will be displayed briefly and then (what seems like) X restarts, then the cursor.. over and over.

I can get to the KDM login prompt by switching to a regular terminal and switching back, but if I don't switch it just just stays on that crash loop indefinitely.

I'm at the end of a battle with pygtk and numeric, so I've had to recompile a ton of python packages on my computer.

I've emerge --sync'd, emerge -avtD world'd, revdep-rebuild'd and run python-updater, so I have no idea what I'm supposed to do to get this working, or even where I should be looking for clues, since Xorg.0.log tells me nothing.

any advice at all would be much appreciated. I'll post whatever people ask to see.

Does your screen blink and go to terminal mode then blinks again like its trying to start X? (just trying to clarify)

yup! that's exactly it. it's like it's just trying to start X over and over again.

it's weird though, if I switch to terminal and switch back it works fine, so long as I don't run any gnome applications.

I had a same problem a while back but it happened when I was trying to boot my machine to gdm. Anyway I think to fix it it might be some minor thing in the xorg.conf file or you might need to re emerge something. It happened to me a while back but i forgot the proper steps.

Hopefully this helps you somewhat.

I haven't changed my xorg.conf at all for a long while, so I dunno how that could have caused it - you're right, more likely I do have to re-emerge something. but what? I've done all the obvious packages, xorg-server, xorg-x11, xdm, kdm, control-center, gnome-panel .. uh .. if you can think of any others that might be related, please let me know

Which graphics card do you have nvidia, ati or other?

Did you just upgraded to the new xorg version(xorg-6.X to 7.X)?

hmm since it was a minor upgrade I don't think that the xorg.conf will be affected.

I would like to see the xorg log

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
just give me the last 25 lines of the log (I know that its pretty big)

sorry about the delay on replying, spent a weekend with my family.

the log seems pretty normal.. my wacom tablet is also acting up, not appearing in the wacomcpl device manager, but you couldn't tell from the log.

every time I load gnome-theme-manager it causes X to reset. could I revdep-rebuild the related libraries?
regular revdep-rebuild doesn't pick up anything.

There is a bug with the latest x.org and the wacom driver. If I try to use my tablet in *any* way, mouse, pen, eraser... It crashes X hard.

nope, it's always run fine in previous versions - I had a gnome-applet command in my KDE startup script that started crashing on startup.

had to take that out, obviously. but this kind of thing has never happened before.

My guess that the newer version of xorg is buggy.

I will suggest to down grade to what ever version that was working and wait till there is a newer version or the current version is fixed other than that I am stumped.

A rule of thumb: don't fix it if it is not broken. (unless theres a security flaw or hole)

what are the essential packages I need to downgrade? do I need to worry about X dependencies?

xorg-server, xorg-x11, xf86-input-keyboard, xf86-input-mouse, linuxwacom ..

anything else?

Sorry for the late reply I don't think you need any more packages to down grade to the Xorg version 7.2. Also its a very minor down grade because of the .1 number, a major upgrade/downgrade would be a whole number (usually the case), for example xorg-6.8 to 7.x.

So just take off Xorg from the /etc/portage/package.keywords (not sure if it is with a 's' or without) and you should be back on the stable Xorg
