I unemerged gzip

and yes i cant emerge anything now.

I feel really stuid but there ya go , i assumed there would be some native support that would allow

me to re-emerge .

Anyhow the reason i did it, i was getting a very large number of emerge failures ie gzip just wasnt unpacking

properly.

so !?x%&* the rest is history

Can someone suggest a way of my getting gzip support back or am i still falling , just waiting to hit the ground

busybox gunzip yourfile.gz

busybox gzip -d gzip-1.3.12.tar.gz

am i in the wrong directory perhaps.
sorry to be a nuisance.

i ran busybox from /var/tmp/portage/app-arch/gzip-1.3.12/

could someone give me a little more explicit help here i need to get gzip back up and safely emerged into my system.

Try mounting an install cd and copying the gzip binary over, then reinstall gzip. I think you'll need squashfs support - compile it as a module if you don't have it already.

I think what he means is boot to the liveCD, mount your directories, then copy the liveCD's gzip to /bin/gzip
Claiming that your operating system is the best in the world because more people use it is like saying McDonalds makes the best food in the world.

aye, the simplest solution be to copy over a compiled gzip (assuming right architecture) and place it into the /usr/bin or /bin , whichever floats your boat.
