I just discovered the superb documentation over at gentoo wiki (HOWTO Email: A complete virtual system).
I'd like to try this at home, as my home e-mail setup is a little bit.... dirty
However, I am a little lost at the moment, because I am not very experienced in this kind of things; here's my setup and what I want to do:
I have a server box (called server.zuhause.own, with a fix IP); this shall act as a mail-server. I have then different clients that connect to this server - they have dhcp enabled, but dhcp is not on the server, but rather on my adsl router (so that I can work & connect to the internet even if the server is not working / running).
I use a fake TLD called zuhause.own, as already said; however, there is no DNS set up for this. What I want is the clients to connect via IMAP to the server; it should be possible to send e-mails to addresses like name@zuhause.own using the server's infrastructure; but also, the server shall collect e-mails from different internet providers, scan it for viruses and spam and sort it into different folders, according to the users / subjects / other rules.
When sending e-mails, they should first go to the server - and routed to an internet provider's mail server, given by the "from" line (e.g. if the from-address is something like "address@domain.com", then the e-mail should be routed to the mail server mail.domain.com).
I'd be glad if anyone could help me here; I am fully aware that the virtual system described is totally overblown for this - but I want to use it for experiments, because I am thinking of getting my own root server wthin the next 3-6 months and I want to practise before this.
Thanks
