I recently updated portage on one of my Gentoo systems. This process updated a number of packages that I will list below. Update of the package "gawk" failed. At this point I can no longer emerge anything without getting the following error:

Code: Select all

shoebox portage # emerge rsync
python2.2: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This system has been running Gentoo since November 2002.

emerge.log (starting on portage update)

Code: Select all

I had a similar problem when updated from a very old verison of gentoo. Just running "ldconfig" with no manual adjustments of config files solved my problem.
