Eve Online and wmii -- possible?

  • Quote

Post by vputz » Mon Aug 13, 2007 12:53 am

I adore wmii and use it as my standard WM. However, when trying to play games via Wine (Eve Online, for example) it does something a bit odd: the eve "loading" screen comes up, but eventually it just stops and the wine process terminates. Seems peculiar to me, as it worked earlier (haven't tried it back on KDE or anything).

Any idea wot's going on?

Greetings,

Right off the bat is sounds like you are probably using Wine 0.9.42 or 0.9.43. I know that 0.9.42 broke Eve, and it looks like 0.9.43 does as well, I would recommend dropping back to 0.9.41 and see if that works. If that doesn't work, make sure you have ariel.ttf in the right location.

EDIT: I found a couple of patches by the maintainer and created a modified ebuild / patch that allows EVE to run under wine-0.9.43. Posted [bug=188747]Bug 188747[/bug] with the ebuild and two patch files to correct this.

Yep, 0.9.43. That's fine; it was working before, so I don't think it's an Arial problem (that got me first time 'round, though). I'll wait for a fix to come out; I don't play much these days anyway.

Confirmed it's probably not a wmii problem; WoW works fine. Okay, I'll just hold off on Eve until Wine gets back working.

Did you try the modified ebuild I posted? Ran Eve for a couple hours last night without issue using the patches.

I'm still recovering from the dreaded 'expat upgrade'--haven't really had time to play much of anything, really. So no, I haven't tried it out, but it's fairly low priority at the moment (preparing to move out of the country!). By the time I have time to play again, I'll wager wine's back to working--and if not, I'll try the ebuild; thanks for it!

I'm having a problem I've not seen described anywhere...

EVE splash screen loads, music begins to play, login screen comes up solid black. Cursor changes to EVE cursor as it passes over it..... Doesn't crash, music continues infinitely, it's just a solid black login screen. Doesn't seem to matter what Wine version I use. Have tried .9.39, .9.40, and .9.41. Exact same result every time.

Using nvidia-drivers...

what else would be useful to know?
