[PARTIALLY SOLVED]skype choppy sound

I recently upgraded to the latest masked skype-1.4.0.74-r2. All seems to be fine but when i ring or get a call or do the test call, the sound has lots of unrelated noises in the begining. After that i can hear without problems. I use a nice wav file for ringing, geting calls.

Also, if the headphones are not connected I can't hear the sound.

Here is the setup i have in sound devices:

Sound In: Intel 82801DB-ICH4(hw: 82801DB-ICH4,0)
Sound Out: Intel 82801DB-ICH4(hw: 82801DB-ICH4,0)
Ringing: Intel 82801DB-ICH4(hw: 82801DB-ICH4,0)

Code: Select all

lspci
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
I use alsa built in the kernel and launch with aoss skype.

Hi,

afaik you don't need to start skype with aoss since it supports alsa natively. Maybe the script causes some trouble resulting in bad sound quality. Also you have to change the "Ringing" Sound Device in skype options, if you like to hear the ringing without your headphone being connected.

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest to post your questions over at Skype Forums...

I already posted on skype forums. There was no answer. Mainly people wanted to know if there is a solution or how to downgrade.

I solved partially the problem. I found out that if I use sound devices-> default device and not the Intel .... options that I had, it rings ok. One more bug that they have is that if i use the default sounds that are provided by skype it rings ok, without all those high pitch noises. I had a nice wav file which I wanted to get as ringing, calling, etc... And I can't blame the song, because the same song with a older version of skype was just fine.

Thanks for the aoss tip.

Try to change the kernel timer frequency to 1000 Hz. ( Processor Type And Features -> Timer Frequency ) and recompile the kernel.
This works for me :).

Bye

Yes, you'll need to reboot after recompiling the kernel.
