No paravirt_ops in >2.6.20 kernels for AMD64?

Hi.

I've seen there were no paravirt_ops for kernels 2.6.20 and 2.6.21 on AMD64. I just wondered why. Is it a technical reason? Or are paravirt_ops only for the x86_32 Intel platform?

It's just not done yet, I think, at least not to mainline standards. The CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT Patch has the kvm enabled for x86_64. It might be in other experimental patchsets as well. I haven't looked into it in any great detail.

ah, Ok, thanks for the info. I can then expect to find these in a near future in the 64-bit kernel.

I was foolling around with 2.6.22-rc5 and even in there paravirtualization is still experimental for any cpu type.

KVM is stable for a long time already as a alternative.

http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/O ... 8069.shtml

Link is for 2.6.22-rc5 nut still in testing stage. Might try it and activate paravirt as alternative kernel to your current install.

Just watch out for the rtl8139 and 2 other non usefull stuff in there as the code needs a a bit of cleanup most of the other hardware options is good.

Thanks for your lights. I'll soon try KVM and compare against Qemu/KQemu. I won't probably be able to notice the difference since they seem to be quite equal in speed but anyway I'm interested. I'm currently evaluating recent snapshots of Qemu/KQemu so I'll give KVM a try soon.

Well in fact my interests about virtualization are only for Windows as there doesn't seem to be many different ways: paravirtualization for Windows seems possible only with XEN 3 running on VT-enabled CPUs. Otherwise all other full-virtualization solutions are the remaining options.

For Linux I prefer OS virtualization - provided I absolutely *must* virtualize anything. I never needed anything more than chrooting until now so virtualizing Linux hasn't proved very useful to me yet (except for testing purposes).
