KDE, HAL, ivman : "Safely Remove" fails [solved]

  • Quote

Post by Vineus » Fri Jun 22, 2007 4:18 am

Hi there.

I successfully installed HAL and dbus using the gentoo-wiki tutorial. My devices are auto mounted ok. The only issue I have is I cannot "remove safely" the devices on kde. When I try to do so, I got this message from kio_media_mounthelper:

Code: Select all

Device to unmount is not in /media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL
The only reference to this problem I found online was here. I don't speak Italian but it seems this person fixed the problem by removing gnome-mount, but I don't have gnome nor gnome-mount installed.

I don't have a /media/.hal-mtab file. I tried to create one and plug a device to see if it was used but it is not (and I still have the kio_media_mounthelper error message)

I can eject or pumount the device as a normal user (and of course unmount it as root).

I use ivman (using the gentoo-wiki howto to mount device as a regular user)

I read here that kde called 'eject' on 'safely remove' but it seems not because eject works just fine.

I read a thread in the gentoo forum about the fact that "safely remove" does not work but it seems it does not concern the same problem.

Any ideas ?

Thank you !

(edit: mark as solved)

Do you have pmount installed?
You might also need to be in the plugdev group.

I don't have anything in my fstab refrencing any removable devices. I found if I did, somethings didn't seem to work.

I don't use ivman. Does it do something that kde with hal and dbus doesn't do?

KDE with hal and dbus will automount your devices. Ivman may be interfering.

edit: I just read the referenced wiki about kde hal and dbus which said if you want to run a script, or play a dvd or cd on insertion to look at ivman. KDE can very easily do all these things, so unless you have some special need or reason for keeping ivman, I would get rid of it.

I say in my message that I can pumount it as a normal user, so the answer is yes, I have pmount installed and I'm in the plugdev group.

I don't have anything either.

I'll try without it, thank you for the advice. But as I said the problem is not when auto mounting the devices but when I try to "safely remove" them using the kde functionality. You may be right, ivman is probably interfering with KDE. I'll try this and update the thread with the result :-)

I found that I needed to re-emerge kdebase-kioslaves after updating HAL to restore KDE's unmount behaviour...

Well, the error message says that "it is not mounted by HAL", so HAL cannot unmount it. Since it is mounted, I would suspect something else mounted it. My first guess is ivman.

You are right. If I kill ivman I can mount/umount the device using the KDE interface. But, if I don't use ivman, the device is not auto-mounted when I plug it in. I have to explicitly click on it under "media:/" to mount it. With ivman the device is auto-mounted and appears directly on the desktop.

So the question is: is it a way to auto-mount the device in HAL without ivman ?

(thank you for your help by the way)

There is an option for each device to auto mount it. I am away from my machine (well, the one with kde on it anyway), but I think when you plug media in and an icon appears, you can click on it and select properties and one of the options would be to automount. I think it is a check box to mount the media automatically.

The options (imagine that, kde giving options) kde gives are pretty broad. You can have kde hide or show types of devices, also based on whether they are mounted or not, and also based on the individual name of the device. You can also choose to mount the device anywhere you want (as long as it is under /media :D).
There are a lot of options, and if you plug in a lot of different types of media (cdrw dvd flashdrive music player camera) and want the system to do something when you put them in, chances are, kde can do it.

You are right ! It's unbelievable what you can do by clicking everywhere on a GUI ! I'm to used to write down things in configurations files, so I never thought that it would be a menu for that ...

Thank you for your help, I mark the subject as "solved"
