xine scrambles movie when selected from dvd menu

On my freevo set-top-box I experience the following problem with xine with certain DVD's:

If I select a chapter from the DVD menu it plays the chapter scrambled (I can barely recognise the content, it looks blocky and shifted). If I select the same chapter from the command line, i.e.

it plays fine

I seem to be having a similar problem, where the bottom half (3/4's, or sometimes all ) of the picture will display a few seperate frames of the image in random order giving the image a blocky or distorted apperance. Almost like a tracking error on a VHS cassette. I first noticed it with a DVD from Netflix and thought the DVD was simply scratched too badly so I put in a DVD that had worked fine that morning and suddenly it was doing it too. Something I had updated / revcheck'd in between the "good" dvd and the "bad" dvd must be the cause; but I can't pick anything out of this list that would cause a problem like this

Well okay xine-lib was updated from 1.1.6, not sure how I missed that.

Interesting. Playing a DVD without -V xxmc (setting video mode to nVidia XVMC) seems to fix this problem but the only mode I can select that still shows the cursor in DVD menu's is "auto"; though the cursor changed color slightly.
