yes.
air@EjdesLap ~ $ groups
wheel cron audio cdrom video users portage vmware

Front is unmuted in alsamixer, but there is not a green "MM" under the PCM bar.

air@EjdesLap ~ $ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14rc3.
Compiled on Apr 21 2007 for kernel 2.6.20-gentoo-r6 (SMP).

Adding the model=3stack options did not help either

alsa-driver from cvs.

I had a similar problem on my Toshiba A100SK9

Try putting:

Code: Select all

media-sound/driver **
media-sound/alsa-headers **
in your /etc/portage/package.keywords
then:

Code: Select all

emerge -av alsa-driver
It should emerge media-sounds/alsa-driver-9999 which is the version from CVS.

Once installed, add:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto id="HDA" position_fix=1
in your /etc/modules.d/alsa.

Don't forget to:

Code: Select all

update-modules
If you have problem with master volume not beeing used with the mixer, try to remove position_fix=1.

This sound issue is getting annoying, and I haven't been able to figure it out on my own and with my research.

I tried what was posted above, and I usually just get no sound even though it appears that everything is working properly. Here are my specs:

lspci:

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
/etc/modules.d/alsa

Code: Select all

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.14rc2 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba id="HDA" position_fix=1
In my kernel, I have sound support enabled but alsa disabled, and my alsa-driver is cvs.

Lately, when I try to run /etc/init.d/alsa restart, I get this:

Code: Select all

i have a macbook with the same sound card. Sound always works when I build the module into the kernel. The just open up a mixer and unmute all.

Im using 2.6.21.

BTW, if you are using kde, make sure you compile with the -arts use flag and add ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel" to your make.conf

Thank you for your response :-)

I've tried the kernel module as well but no cigar.

Are you using Vanilla or Gentoo sources or something else?

Also, here is the relevant make.conf info:

Code: Select all

USE="opengl dbus -qt3 -qt4 -arts X avahi acpi aim alsa cairo cdr cups firefox flac gnome -kde gtk hal howl javascript mp3 mpeg mplayer ogg perl php python usb win32codecs wifi"
ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel"
One thing that occurs to me is that this laptop has a volume dial. Could it be that the sound won't work until after I've loaded the driver needed for that dial? If so, any idea what that would be called?

Edit: here's a complete lspci:

I have the same onboard sound.

In your /etc/modules.d/alsa

Change this line:

Code: Select all

alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

To this:

Code: Select all

alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
Not totally sure it will make a difference, but then it would match my working setup.

my /etc/modules.d/alsa

Code: Select all

## ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
## OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1
Run `update-modules' after you've made changes.

Just a note for anyone else suffering with this issue: it's actually related to acpi. As soon as you boot with acpi=off, sound works. I've spent some time working on fixing my dstd, which I guess has fixed the problem for some people. If I ever get it working, I'll post here.
