Network monitoring

hi All,

I have some trouble using my wireless network recently.
Whenever I connect to my wireless point, my machine starts downloading stuff from the internet continuously (according to conky); it is still the same when i closed all the applications that could be possibly using the network. But my Ethernet works fine.
What is a good software to monitor my network traffic to see what (ports etc.) i am actually downloading?

What is a good software to monitor my network traffic to see what (ports etc.) i am actually downloading?

I've always liked net-analyzer/iftop. It's small, and pretty informative. It uses libpcap, so you'll need that, too. Both should emerge easily.

Also, check out commands like `netstat`, `route`, or other standard *nix network utilities. You might find some helpful info.

with tcpdump u can see as well what do the packages have

ethereal (now wireshark) is quite good as well if u search for a gui app.

netstat -nat | grep EST

will give you a list of established TCP connection to the box in question. If you
add in a "-p" and run it as root (or with sudo) you can see what application
is running on the port as well.

That should give you some information on what's going on...

Oh and "net-analyzer/iptraf" is a nice little console app for monitoring TCP
and UDP connections. It's pretty simple to use as well..

you can also use conky to monitor ports. look up the conky variable `tcp_portmon' in the man pages.
