Coming back to the pack....Any suggestions

All....

Well, after a couple of years I'm coming back to Gentoo. It provides me with more confiruability and choices than all the other distributions I've used over the past few years. I just hope the stability has improved since my last venture...

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I'm a huge XFCE fan - what's the best USE flags to set...

Thanks!!

Welcome back, johnnymac :)

Here are my use flags:

Code: Select all

USE="X alsa arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cairo cdr cli crypt cups dbus dlloader dri dvd dvdr eds elibc_glibc emboss \
encode esd fam firefox fortran gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk hal input_devices_evdev input_devices_keyboard \
input_devices_mouse ipv6 isdnlog jpeg kde kernel_linux ldap libg++ mad mikmod mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl nptlonly ogg opengl \
oss pam pcre pdflib perl png ppds pppd python qt3 qt4 quicktime readline reflection sdl session spell spl ssl tcpd\
truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userland_GNU vorbis win32codecs x86 xml xorg xv zlib \
apache2 kdehiddenvisibility jpeg2k tiff -ipv6 lcms mng svg wmf mmx 3dnow pdf glitz sse -gstreamer aiglx"
I have some other in package.use, because some things I want enabled only for some apps.

I'm a kde user, so I enabled kde flag, If you will use xfce, you might want to disable it. About stability, gentoo can be as stable as you want it to, or not.

Have fun using gentoo.

...dont use others use flags

grab the use flag list and drop in anything you might want.

Portage is much more stable than it used to be. I did a fresh install a couple of weeks ago and I had zero portage problems (using amd64 stable). So far, I've had no problems with packages not installing.

Here is a great page for USE flags. I used profuse to help me set my USE flags when I first installed. It's quirky (buggy?) but useful.

I use eix to search for packages in Portage. It is the only way to fly and was one of the first packages I installed. I've also started using Paludis instead of emerge but it has a bit of a learning curve so you might want to wait until after you have your X desktop up and running before tackling it.

If you're talking about speed, you should try portage-utils.

After you get settled in you might want to try a potential portage replacement as well. I personally use paludis but there is pkgcore as well.

More on topic Xfce is nice and it just recently started getting more support within Gentoo so if things go well I might switch myself... then again maybe not. If your shooting for stability I'd follow the install guide to the t and then branch out with use flags from there. Keep it simple and keep it stable at first.
