I've had this every time I've tried to update openoffice for the last few months and have only just decided to post about it thinking that it would 'just go away'

Do you have the packages dev-perl/IO-Compress-Zlib and dev-perl/Archive-Zip installed?

I have the exact same problem. Seeing how this hasn't been touched for years, how should I proceed?

Installing Compress::Zlib from cpan fails badly: Bareword "Compress::Zlib::zlib_version" and such errors.

eix -c Compress
dev-perl/Compress-Zlib (2.005@10/19/2007): A Zlib perl module
dev-perl/IO-Compress-Base (2.011@06/12/2008): Base Class for IO::Compress modules
dev-perl/IO-Compress-Zlib (2.011@06/12/2008): Read/Write compressed files
dev-perl/Compress-Raw-Zlib (2.011@06/12/2008): Low-Level Interface to zlib compression library

The problems all started when I updated to IO-Compress-Zlib 2.011. I've heard that the 2.x branch of Compress::Zlib is broken but I can't find ebuilds for 1.4x. Any tips on how to get old ebuilds?
