pingus masked

  • Quote

Post by hilde » Wed Mar 21, 2007 11:00 am

Although pingus is still marked "stable" at http://packages.gentoo.org, it seems to be hard masked in portage:

Code: Select all

laptop-hilde hilde # emerge -pv pingus

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies |
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "pingus" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- games-puzzle/pingus-0.6.0-r1 (masked by: package.mask)
# Michael Sterrett <mr_bones_@gentoo.org> (19 Mar 2007)
# masked for removal in April.
# Old and nasty. Not supported by upstream.
# use the newer versions of clanlib instead.
I don't think pingus is nasty, it's just a bit old (that's of course my opinion).
The main thing is: I don't understand what Michael Sterrett means when he writes "use the newer versions of clanlib instead.", since clanlib is just a library. In my opinion, it doensn't make much sense to replace a game by a library to build games. Does anyone know what is meant by this sentence?

It means pingus depends on a version of clanlib which is old and nasty.
Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once.

So the "use the newer versions of clanlib instead." is not really meant for the users? Thanks for the explanation.

I suppose you could email Mr. Sterrett for the whole story, but that's what it looks like.

And I assume ClanLib's API changed?

If someone were to port Pingus to ClanLib 0.8, would that save the ebuild?

Supposedly there is work going on to port pingus to SDL, though I have no idea how vigorously.

I wish the masking would be held off until we had the new SDL version ready, especially since they seem to be working on it.

Don't be too expectant. Sadly the SDL port is not really playable and there is no active development at the moment (I spoke to Grumbel about it yesterday).

I had hoped seeing their posting being from Jan'07 that development was active. I suppose another excellent app will die the portage death... It's funny that I personally seem to use every app that gets removed

(And before people tear me up for calling pingus excellent, I mean excellent because pingus is a fun game, not excellent that it is unmaintained and depends on old libraries.)

I think Pingus development will return (I plan for it to happen - since I have a good audience these days I'm going to make an appeal in a bit) so it won't die a portage death.

There is an ebuild available for it in bugzilla. You need both the ebuild and the patch. Works great here on amd64.

Just unmerge scons and emerge it again and it will work.
