etc-update gone?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Recently etc-update has disappeared. Is it in a particular portage package that I should reinstall?

Code: Select all

localhost ryan # etc-update
bash: etc-update: command not found

Nope, it's still part of sys-apps/portage. It should be at /usr/sbin/etc-update

Check your PATH, maybe /usr/sbin was accidentally removed from it?

yea, deleted from the path somehow. For some reason I can't think of where the path is set, as root has no ~/.bashrc or anything similar. The path was set to:
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin

But for now I have it set using just
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin

PATH is set in /etc/profile using a few hard-coded locations plus those set in /etc/env.d/* by various packages. The path you had is the bare path for a normal user (the hard-coded dirs only), not for root.

 Did you login as root, or use su to become root? If the latter, I'll wager you typed su instead of su - and root's environment didn't get set.
