emerge command not found after unmerge python

Hello,

I'm quite new to gentoo, and made the (aparently) stupid mistake of unmerging python. Now my portage doesn't seem te be working anymore. I downloaded the most recent python and did a manual configure && make && make install, and python is running fine again, but still when I try to emerge something "emerge: command not found" is the result.

Is there any way to re-install or fix portage? Any help greatly appreciated!

except the python release in your /usr/portage/distfiles will be more recent than that.

On the topic of Python removal,

I just updated to 2.5 and I wanted to make sure it's save to remove 2.4.4 now, after I've run python-updater and re-merged all python-relevant packages.
