rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10)

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10)

Hello everyone! I've tried a few linux distros and am ready to get myself into gentoo. Portage seems very interesting -- that is if i can get the damn thing up and running :roll:

Anyways, I started with the minimal cd and everything has been fine up until this point. I've covered steps 1-5 in the installation document which consisted of configuring the network, partitioning, installing the installation files, and installing portage.

Now i'm supposed to install the base system. Well the problem comes when I'm asked to run the "emerge --sync" command.

I get the following output:
Notice: (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')
>>> Starting rsync with rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
>>> Checking server timestamp ...
rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.namerica.gentoo.org 873: Temporary failure in name resolution
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(107) [receiver=2.6.8]
I'm fairly certain my internet connection is working fine, though I cannot refresh my ipaddress now as dhclient isnt installed and "dhcpcd" is no longer available since switching to my newly installed environment. I am able to ping my router and other computers on the network, but cannot seem to ping any websites.

My other computer can ping websites fine and is obviously connected to the internet. Both are behind the same router, and I'm positive that's not the problem... clearly my laptop (where the install is going) is not connecting to the rsync server.

Any help? Thanks!

Shane

Hi and Welcome,

It looks like /etc/resolv.conf is empty. Make sure you got something in there that matches your other computers.

You can use the <ctrl>+<F2> key combination to switch to virtual console number two and work from there (the livecd level). you should be able to `cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/` if you are playing along at home with the official game :)

<ctrl>+<F1> will take you back to virtual console 1.

if you are in a network with a Router/Firewall. Just add

Code: Select all

nameserver 192.168.1.1
you must add your Gateway IP address if this isn't yours.
I think Gentoo is great!
