*THAT* win-games *DO* run in vmware workstation

what about a nice collection of games, that will run using vmware-workstation?
lets collect a list, and discuss problems here (if the mods dont mind).

recently i came along this thread:
http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/ ... ience.html

above works great here, directx 9.0c works finally :P
i made most of Command And Conquer work this way.

the list sofar:

Code: Select all

Age of Empires 1
Age of Empires 2
Baldur's Gate 2
C&C Tiberian Sun
C&C Tiberian Sun - Firestorm
C&C Red Alert
C&C Red Alert - The Aftermath
C&C Red Alert - Counterstrike
C&C Red Altert II
C&C Red Altert II - Yuris Revenge
Diablo 1
Diablo 2
Diablo 2 - Llord Of Destruction
Football Manager 2006
Heroes Of Might And Magic 3 + Addons
Icewind Dale 2
Chessmaster 10th
Gettysburg
Star Wars Galactic Battleground
Total Annihilation
Planescape Torment
Zork Nemesis
didnt get C&C Generals and C&C Renegade to work yet, though. above is nice for a start, right? :P
i will edit the list and add what you tell me.

thanks, and happy gameing!

gaming in vmware -- a little hardware-intensive, right? Have you seen cedega? it uses wine, and the games list is huge.

cedega isnt free either, and winex-cvs doesnt compile on amd64. additionally both of them are not in portage, vmware is.

OTOH - so what?
whats wrong with a list of playable games in vmware 8O
if you are not interessted, just ignore this thread.

i myself (and probably a few others) are using vmware, and vmware-player is free of charge. so i thought this would be a nice topic for those of us owning a few win-games.
excuse me, i just like to collect a list, and exchange experiences with others, how to get more and more games to work. i dont think anything wrong with that 8O
man, even sticky threads in this forum that are even less relevant to gentoo, and this one is.

didnt want to step on the foots of those wine, winex, cedega users, so why stepping on mine?

fair enough. hopefully you can get some games running other than C&C, and if you ever want bump-mapping hardwrae accelleration or any of the other features as yet unsupported by vmware-workstation, just remember you do have other options.

i am aware about those "other options". but this simply is not the topic of this thread.
why not simply leaving the thread alone if you are not interessted?
there are people running vmware anyway, 24/7. do you suggest they should run cedega additionally at the very same time?

now - please, leave this thread alone.
thx!

I haven't tried anything too hardware intensive, but you can add these to your list:

Icewind Dale 2
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape Torment

And for what it's worth, I did try to get these games working under wine and it turned out to be a huge pain in the ass and never really worked right. With vmware they run perfectly, I don't have to worry about every mod or patch causing it to break, and I can easily window or minimize vmware. If it weren't for vmware, I'd be booting into windows to play these games.

Time ago, when I used vmware (circunstantial needs), Chessmaster 10th ran great. I remember that was a great game (I couldn't get it to work on wine or cvs cedega/winex).

OTW I don't think erik258 aim was to flame here.

Everything that does not require 3d acceleration works in vmware.

Sid Meier's Gettysburg! and the Antietam expansion pack work great.

You just have to make sure you have the WinXP patches for the above games, the same as what you would need for normal WinXP. Probably DarkStalker is correct, anything that doesn't need 3D acceleration should work fine in Vmware.

Cedega tends to be a joke. If it isn't a hot game that is actively supported, it will break eventually even if it worked in the past.

sure, but enableing the direct3d acceleration (experimental and not fully supported) does also make 3d games work.
i thought after i posted the link, you guys would try out a few other games you have. as long as they dont need >directx8 features, they might work fine.
i myself was pretty much surprised to get red altert and tiberian sun to work. no chance using wine, and as i already stated winex doesnt compile here.

It probably also matters whether you use Windows XP, 2000 or 9x inside the vmware.

hmm.. well, i am using W2K

however, didnt come across a game yet *not* working using w2k that uses directx8 at maximum.
those games should work in w98, w2k and xp.

hmm, dunno about w95 <lol>, but AFAIK directx8 is available even for w98.

A few more :

Diablo 2 + LoD
Zork nemesis. I didn't try Zork grand inquisitor, but since it's the same engine i assume it works as well.

edit: This was in a windows XP guest.

LoD = lord of destruction, add-on to diablo 2

and a few more :
Diablo 1
heroes of might and magic 3 + addons (shadows of erathia, armageddon's blade)

Deus Ex but some of the effects render badly (unpleasant epileptic effect)

Cedega is in portage.
Wine plays most games just fine and is in portage (and is free as in beer!).
Since when is vmware free?
I thought it was a lot more costly (and worse for gaming) than cedega.
gaming in vmware -- a little hardware-intensive, right? Have you seen cedega? it uses wine, and the games list is huge.
Just to clarify - Cedega is a wine fork.
It doesn't 'use' wine.

Wine runs some games well and Cedega runs some games well, I have used wine, vmware, and cedega for gaming.

I have had problems with vmware specifically running gunbound, and World of Warcraft.

Everything else I tried ran fine in VMware, but just as well, or better on wine/cedega.

Well Wine works *sometimes*, but everytime i try to make a specific game work, i just lose a few evening to figure out i'd better give up, borrow my gf laptop and play on it :D
That for GTA2, HL2, Winning Eleven 9 .. bad luck maybe ...
Even plain old HL on Stema wouldn't work last time i tried.

And BTW, that is both for Wine and cedega.

Good to know that some could run on vmware, at least the oldies but goodies :)

Also, if you plan on cheating in a lot of games, vmware is a must.
For example maphacking on diablo II or starcraft, as wine and cedega don't allow two instances to 'see each other' and hook into each other's windows.
(This is how I know WoW doesn't work on vmware, I was trying to use my bot ^_^)

Feel free to add on Football Manager 2006! I assume Football Manager 2007 works as well but I have not tried it yet (give me a few hrs till i get in from work :P).

Game runs almost perfectly, mouse is not 100% smooth but no problems.

P.s - The game runs under cedega/wine great BUT match highlights are akin to playing age of empires under the same system (least in fm2007 u can finally turn highlights off!)

Maquis196 - will add more after testing

i wrote "vmware isnt free either".

but while you ask: vmware-player is free :P
si if is just about playing games, you could use vmware trial to build your image, and afterwards use the vmware-player.

downloaded and installed DirectX9.0c and it actually ran!!! but it ran like crap. almost nothing showed up on the screen.. it just wasn't good, don't even try it... not worth it.

thanks for the tip though, i'll be trying other games in vmware now.
