I am still rather a nublet when it comes to Linux, but I'd guess try emerge jre -s and pick one of the Java Runtime Environment's?

Runescape is likely best suited for the "Sun Java Runtime Environment". The package name is dev-java/sun-jre-bin.
Read this, aswell.. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Java_and_Firefox

I got runescape running but after playing a while I cannot perform any mouseclicks anymore and also any keyboard input seems to be disabled. I have this issue with both 32 bit java in firefox-bin and 64-bit java in Bon Echo. The weird thing is the runescape-applet keeps running and I can still move the mouse pointer around but that's it. I have to reset my computer everytime this happens with the risk of getting killed in runescape. Any thoughts? I'm running gnome, beryl on an amd64 arch.

It seems that when you go to another window firefox/bonecho lose the focus of the keyboard, although here I still have the mouse. I find that using konqueror (meaning you have to emerge a lot of kde) solves this problem for me. The 64bit sun java fits well with konqueror. Good luck, and ignore the anti-runescape trolls, we know a fun game when we see one. :)
