Installing/compiling on a different system

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Installing/compiling on a different system

I would like to have Gentoo on the computer at my girlfriend's house, which is running on a 600MHz Pentium 3. I don't want to have to put a lot of time in compiling/configuring, since that will scare them :-). What are the things I can already do on my own computer? How hard/risky are the steps? I have full knowledge of all hardware involved (cpu, mobo, pci-cards, ...). Ideally, I would like to copy over entire premade partitions to her system. How close can I possibly get to this?

if you have a x86(or have x86 installed) you can hook up the harddrive and install to it as if you were in a livecd. if you aren't using x86 but have a amd64 you could rig a chroot and install it from there or boot up a x86 livecd ... and come to think of it you should be to the chroot step before that so it should matter lol, just hook it up and treat your system like a livecd^^

I've just done this, trying to compile on a fast machine and run the binaries on a slow
one. I had a couple of shots, but for some reason couldn't get the configuration
correct, though the kernel booted OK. I think I had make.conf wrongly set up.

In the end I just copied the correct stage 3 file and portage snapshot over, and
let it compile overnight. Seemed the easiest course.

Thanks for the replies so far.

They're running Ubuntu now, but I'm not very pleased with the results. The system is slower then I expected, nothing like for example my server, a 800 MHz Pentium3. I want them to switch to Gentoo, but make the transition as fast as possible (convincing them to drop Windows was hard enough already). But if you guys think the performance gain of compiling for Pentium3 with Gentoo instead of installing i386 binaries with Ubuntu is negligable, then I don't even have to bother.

If you *do* expect some noticeable gain, then I want the transition to be as fast as possible. Taking their hard drive home with me is not an option. I want to go over there with, say, a USB drive and a LiveCD, boot from the LiveCD, whipe the Ubuntu-partitions (/home is on a separate partition), and somehow copy over a Gentoo *system* that I *somehow* made with my Pentium4.

I need your help/suggestions on filling in the *somehow* (and probably even the *system*, since I won't be able to run it on my own system).

I do have VMWare, but I guess that isn't configurable to the point of telling it what cpu and motherboard components the virtual machine must have :-)

The lack of extra crap will help, but it'll be up to you to streamline it... http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Lightning_ ... rom_LiveCD that will help, VERY fast install, but I've never tried it so I can't vouch... NOTE: you will probably want to twick the make.conf etc. after that and do a emerge -e system just to make sure everything is running the best it can^.~
