Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Unable to play audio CDs

  • Quote

Post by sebgarden » Sun Nov 05, 2006 7:29 pm

Hi,
I am currently unable to play audio CDs, although I rebuilt my complete system. I tried using totem,
rhythmbox, mplayer for playing CDs, or sound-juicer for extracting them: totem complains that there
is no URI handler for cdda:///dev/sr0, rhythmbox is crashing when I insert an audio CD, mplayer gives:

Code: Select all

seb@orchidee ~ $ mplayer /dev/sr0
MPlayer 1.0pre8-4.1.1 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ (Family: 15, Model: 35, Stepping: 2)
MMX2 supported but disabled
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 0 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX 3DNow 3DNowEx SSE SSE2

Playing /dev/sr0.
Cache fill: 0.00% (0 bytes)

Exiting... (End of file)
However, sound-juicer is able to get the songs list off the CD and cdda2wav can extract them.
cdda-player can play them but I cannot hear anything, although I only have one audio device
and the audio device works flowlessly for files I have on my computer. I thought it could be a
device permission but not: after chmod -R 777 /dev/snd/*, the result is the same.

I just emerged gst-plugins-cdio, as it was not installed and I thought that could help gnome apps,
but nope. The only temporary work-around I have is to extract audio files with cdda2wav, but
that's pretty ugly. Does someone has an idea of what is wrong ?

Regards,

Sebastien.

I found this post on the same topic https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-2 ... ndler.html but it doesn't give a hint other that the problem could be a missing cable between CD player and motherboard. But I don't believe that because I already played CDs on this computer.
Any other hint ?

I've had more or less the same problems, except that I am able to PLAY CDs with sound-juicer. Have you tried that?

Hey there,

From the look of your USE's, you are using alsa. Using alsamixer, make certain that the volume for the cd player is *NOT* muted.

Hope this helps........

I have a similar problem. When I try to use BMPx to play AudioCD's I got:
ERROR [Element: src]
(E202) Couldn't open the stream/track

Current URI:
/dev/hda

Detailed debugging information:

gstfilesrc.c(980): gst_file_src_start (): /pipeline_file/src:
system error: access denied
Similar thing happens whe I try to use Totem.
I checked this and this thread, but it appears that no-one has a solution.
Anyone has a clue on how to play AudiCD's in Gnome :?: :?: :?

Hmm strange. Make sure if all your hardware is ok, for example if your cddriver has cable connection with your soundcard ( my lg x12 cdrecorder has a cable to connect with soundcard ).

hardware is OK, I used to play CD when I was using Suse with KDE, so that's not the problem.
