And how about the Apple MacBooks?

Hi,

The new Apple MacBooks feature an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. This makes it an x86_64 machine, for all I know. But does this mean that one could install a x86_64 Gentoo Linux on it as if it was an ordinary PC?

Has anyone tried this? Is there any info on this?

I have been looking around, and the only information I found is about using Portage on MacOSX... but I am talking about running a full blown native Gentoo Linux on it.

Anyone?

No idea whether it counts as x86_64 but it certainly isn't an AMD64 :P

There's an article about installing Gentoo on a MacBook in the Gentoo wiki: HARDWARE Apple MacBook

Not sure it is updated enough to cover the new Intel CPUs but the history of the article tells me it's been under revision for some time and I bet it's updated enough to answer your questions.

Good luck!

Hi,
i'm trying too to install gentoo on the latest macbook (3rd gen, right?). The issue is that howtos suggest to install using the installcd minimal ia64, but it refuses to boot even as legacy (BIOS) even as EFI.
there's out there a custom minimal CD to start within the ia64 environment ?

Have someone a hint to solve that issue ?
Thanks!

IA64 is the Intel Itanium architecture. That's not a "normal" PC. It's something completely different. Intel Macs use the Intel Core2Duo chip. For that, you can use the AMD64 install disk. I have not tried to install AMD64 Gentoo on an Intel Mac, but I would think it should work under bootcamp.

The bootcamp install guide says that 64-bit Windows is not supported. But I supposed that's because they don't have 64-bit Windows drivers for the hardware. That isn't an issue in Linux.

I don't know if the various virtualization products (VMware, Parallels, etc). support 64-bit installs. You'll have to read the details on those products very carefully. You may have to stick with a 32-bit Linux install on those.

oookey, so I probably mixed up different sources and got confusion, because I understood that ia64 was a sub-project of AMD64, intended for those Intel CPU that use EM64T extensions instead of a true 64bit processor

Thanks, I'll try with AMD64
