Cannot select any v4l drivers without deprecated API

With gentoo-sources 2.6.18, I have to select "Enable Video For Linux API 1 (DEPRECATED)", otherwise I cannot find "BT848 Video For Linux" under Video Capture Adapters.
Am I missing something or should it be like this? I do not get any picture without selecting the driver though.

I'm curious about this as well. http://bttv-v4l2.sourceforge.net/ shows that the kernel driver should be v4l2, and I'm fairly certain that's what it's said for a long time. I didn't worry too much about the change, but now my card will _not_ change channels (ATI TV Wonder VE). Never had this problem until recently, but I did have a broken X for quite a while so the problem could be something else. Is there an updated bt848 driver that's not included in gentoo-sources for some reason?

It also worries me. I also had to select the "Enable Video For Linux API 1 (DEPRECATED)". A cople of month ago it worked well, now I have some start up problems. It xawtv does not start anymore when I start bttv via /etc/modules.autoload.d. When I load the driver manually modprobe bttv radio=0 card=39 tuner=0 gbuffers=32 everything is ok.

I hope that one day Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) will support my card with the cx8800 driver. It looks that cx8800 and bttv come both from http://bytesex.org/bttv/

EDIT: I've found several references to the fact that bttv is not in fact v4l2, and just has a v4l2 compatability layer (if anything). This explains the v4l1 requirement.
