emacs-cvs (23) font problems

Post by flazz » Wed Oct 04, 2006 8:59 pm

i emerged emacs-cvs-23.0.0 because i want smooth fonts. i get smooth fonts for regular text, but bold, italics and fonts other than the one specified in --font are ugly.

i call it like http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/XftGnuEmacs says to call it.

Code: Select all

emacs --enable-font-backend --font "Bitstream Vera Mono-14"
i tried getting the emacs-unicode-2 branch from cvs, same branch the ebuild calls, same problem, there seems to be nothing wrong with the ebuild.

i talked to people in #emacs on freenode and they showed me screenshots that look perfect (list-faces-display).

i can change actual fonts by clicking on them in list-faces-display and set the options for a face to the family slant and weight and they look great. it just seems that emacs is getting the wrong defaults.

it seems to be that emacs is not getting the fonts it needs from xft besides the one specified on the command line. all other fonts it seems to be rendering in some arcane (not smooth) way.

has anyone gotten emacs-23 to work on a gentoo system with regular, bold and italic fonts looking smooth?

I can confirm that all fonts work fine for me when I do M-x list-faces-display. I use

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/emacs.emacs-23.0.0 --enable-font-backend --font Monospace-10
Edit: there are some faces which use another font, and those do not appear anti-aliased: fixed-pitch, for example.

This is the best thing since sliced bread -- wonderful antialiased fonts in emacs! I can't believe how pretty it is! This really changes my relationship to linux.

However, there is one minor problem: I first did a manual compile/install of the emacs-unicode-2 trunk into /usr/local/bin. I configured with these values:

--with-gtk --enable-font-backend --with-freetype --with-xft=yes --prefix=/usr/local

and everything is golden. However, I need to tweak this copy to make it see all the stuff installed in /usr/share/emacs, and I wanted the convenience of the ebuild. So I emerged it like this:

USE="X gtk xft" emerge emacs-cvs

I get the same antialiased goodness, but not the gtk scrollbar which I get from the manual compilation; the one that I get is ugly and unusable. Does anyone know how one can get the gtk scrollbar with the ebuild?

Thanks

Thomas

Phantastic, that was it! Thanks a lot, life with emacs has never been better!
