XGL & Gnome - White screen problem

  • Quote

Post by dfcruz » Fri Sep 22, 2006 11:32 pm

Hello there,

I've just finished installing XGL on my gentoo system and enabled Gnome to use it. I've followed the instructions available in http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL and everything compiled and installed without any type of error. However, everytime I try to run compiz my entire screen turns blank, I can still see the effects happening and alt-tab shows me the active applications I have but everything is white and unusable. Trying it in window mode turned out to be the same:

Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv -fp /usr/share/fonts/misc,/usr/share/fonts/other_fonts

This above command worked fine but when starting compiz with the command below reproduces the error:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ \
DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch compiz dbus csm
DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch cgwd
DISPLAY=:1 xterm

I have the latest version of all software available and the latest compiz from Quinnstorm. Has anyone encountered this error before and knows how to fix it?

Before updating my system XGL worked fine. Last update before this one was 1-2 months ago though.

Thanks in advance.

Same problem here. I have no idea how to apply this patch. Should I download compiz unpack it, apply patch and compile it?

Hello,

compiz<->Xgl compatibility seems to have been broken by the recent glproto update to 1.4.8.

Try the following:

1) emerge =glproto-1.4.7
2) emerge xgl

In other words: downgrade glproto and re-emerge Xgl. Please let me know if this worked for you, it has for me.

Regards, Ray.

No luck here either.
Thanks for the suggestion Ray, the glproto-1.4.7 trick seemed to work once, but the white screen is back.
Spiker, to build from latest cvs, did you emerge compiz-quinnstorm-9999? Or did you do it manually?

What versions of mesa, xgl and compiz are people using?

Cheers,
Chris

Update: Further to this, I can confirm that AIGLX works properly, so the problem does appear to be with Xgl (not compiz-quinnstorm as suggested in the compiz.net thread) but that's just a guess ;)

Downgraded glproto and recompiled mesa, xgl, and compiz-quinnstorm and dbus and csm and it worked for me.

Thank you guys for your suggestions. I have tried, to no avail. I'm running it in an embedded window to test and I get an entirely white cube. Runs great, just it's all white ;)

I masked >=media-libs/mesa-6.5.1 and this is what I have re-emerged

Code: Select all

x11-proto/glproto-1.4.7
x11-proto/compositeproto-0.3.1
x11-proto/fixesproto-4.0
x11-libs/libdrm-2.0.2
x11-base/x11-drm-20060608
media-libs/mesa-6.5.1_rc2-r20060831
media-libs/glitz-0.5.6
x11-libs/cairo-1.2.4
x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r2
x11-base/xgl-0.0.1_pre20060823
x11-wm/compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.57-r1
sys-apps/dbus-0.62-r1
x11-misc/csm-0.12
Run revdep-rebuild (nothing broken), rebooted and still the same problem occurs :(

I am using the xgl-coffee overlay. Could someone please post the versions of the above they have installed so I can try those?

Thanks!
Chris

Hey Ericsson, thanks for the help. I did run install.sh, but it is install.sh.OLD. Is this what you ran? I'm using revision 448 of xgl-coffee's overlay, what version are you using? Did you run

Code: Select all

./install.sh.OLD full quinnstorm
?

Cheers,
Chris

XGL & Gnome - White screen problem

  • Quote

Post by ericsson » Tue Sep 26, 2006 5:19 pm

Hello,

Yes I ran the install.sh.old but without any arguments. I don't know why it works now because I have already reemerged all the stuff before several times.

Here is what I have installed:

Code: Select all

x11-proto/glproto-1.4.8
x11-proto/compositeproto-0.3.1
x11-proto/fixesproto-4.0
x11-libs/libdrm-2.0.2
media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r1
media-libs/glitz-0.5.6
x11-libs/cairo-1.2.4
x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r2
x11-base/xgl-0.0.1_pre20060823
x11-wm/compiz-quinnstorm-9999
sys-apps/dbus-0.62-r1
x11-misc/csm-0.12
I also have the beta nvidia-drivers-1.0.9625 installed. I would not think that this matters.

similar yesterday, after upgrading to gcc-4.1 and had to recompile the kernel
before compiling my video driver to make everything happy

(Just in case you upgraded that far)
The solutions are easy. Its finding them that is hard.

Downgrade your glproto.

tylerwylie, ericsson said his system works now.. and that's with glproto 1.4.8, strange!
Maybe there is more afoot here than originally thought?

I have spent about 15 hours with all possible combinations I can think of to see if I can get it to work :?

I'll try ericsson's versions as they are a bit different to mine and see what happens. He said he re-ran install.sh.OLD and it fixed his problems. Maybe it won't fix mine now because I have re-built some package against something else older than I am now, I dunno.
i.e. maybe he built everything against glproto 1.4.7 and it works, and only recently upped 1.4.8. If so it's hard to know what's causing the issue (if you follow what I'm saying).

I'll have another play and see what comes up on the dice.

Just to report that this totally worked for me using windowed XGL(first time installing this, so I don't know what to expect)

Now to make this default for the whole screen!!!

Thanks

I downgraded to glproto-1.4.7, but I'm still getting a white screen. The whole XGL window goes white once I load the following commands:

Code: Select all

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ \
DISPLAY=:1 dbus-launch compiz dbus csm
I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

XGL Present
compiz: SmcOpenConnection failed: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

** (process:28910): WARNING **: bailing, couln't find a val for put_viewport_up in

** (process:28910): WARNING **: bailing, couln't find a val for put_viewport_down in

I'm not exactly sure what this means. Is this to do with glproto?

I recompiled mesa, xgl and compiz against the downgraded glproto first.

Hi I noticed this in the changelog for glproto,
*glproto-1.4.8 (20 Sep 2006)

20 Sep 2006; Donnie Berkholz <dberkholz@gentoo.org>;
+glproto-1.4.8.ebuild:
Bump for new tfp opcodes. Need to build xorg-server against this version if
using mesa 6.5.1 and wanting nice compositing eye candy.
am doing a
emerge glproto mesa xorg-server xgl compiz-quinnstorm compiz-quinnstorm-plugins
as we speak

tylerwylie: What versions of mesa, xgl and compiz do you have? I tried this already and did not succeed, no matter what versions I try I'm getting white screens. I think it's the combination of versions I have.

This is what I have right now:

Code: Select all

x11-proto/glproto
      Latest version available: 1.4.8
      Latest version installed: 1.4.7

media-libs/mesa
      Latest version available: 6.5.1-r1
      Latest version installed: 6.5.1-r1

x11-apps/mesa-progs
      Latest version available: 6.5.1
      Latest version installed: 6.5

x11-base/xgl
      Latest version available: 0.0.1_pre20060823-r1
      Latest version installed: 0.0.1_pre20060823-r1

x11-wm/compiz-quinnstorm
      Latest version available: 0.0.13.57-r1
      Latest version installed: 0.0.13.57-r1
Also, I was going to try vanilla compiz, but I can't because it's going to require me to upgrade X.org, but my drivers won't work because I need the older versions for my ATi card and the old version of the drivers don't support the latest X.org, they run on X.org 7.0.

The patch proposed here (proposed above) did work for me, but it wasn't committed to svn as of today.

You will need to delete de lines beginning with "-" and change the line with "/opt/mesa-xgl-cvs/lib" with the path for your mesa lib files (/usr/lib/ or something like that). And don't forget to reemerge compiz-quinnstorm-plugins afterwards.

Strange thing is, I have two other boxes with *exactly* the same configuration and everything works fine... Go figure...
