I just finished emerging KDE 3.1.1, and it seems some of the fonts are messed up. They just look like little squares, no letters or anything. Helvetica and other builtin fonts seem to suffer from this problem, but most of the fonts work fine. Like all the fonts in the KDE Help program are just squares. I already reemerge xfs, truetype, and fontconfig, but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem could be?
I had the exact same problem until I moved the arial.ttf file from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/ to somewhere else (/tmp in my case) to get it out of that directory and restarted KDE and everything was fine.
I discovered this because mozilla and phoenix would not start (as well as the kde problem). I ran a strace on mozilla and I discovered it was getting a read permission error on the arial.ttf file. Moved that file out and my KDE,Mozilla and Phoenix started working. This happened to me before and I believe I moved the file back and everything still work, but I haven't done that yet in this case. I figure it is a permission problem that happens after an update. I think it happens when I update freetype 2.x, but I can't say for sure as I upgrade xfree to 4.3 yesterday as well.
Now if I could get evolution working... I remerged in an attempt to get the spell check working again (borked a while back) and now the mail component crashes when trying to view compose messages, even the preferences section causes the mail component to crash. Other components work fine...????
