K3B fails to burn DVDs, works ok for CD's

  • Quote

Post by scharkalvin » Sun Sep 17, 2006 11:11 pm

I used to be able to create dvd's and burn them.

BTW I think my setup is actually creating a CD file system
of a DVD size instead of a true DVD file system. (Must have
the wrong tools installed).

I can burn a cd iso (to a cd-r disk) but I can't
burn a DVD-R disk. The drive IS a DVD ± R/RW DL drive.

Getting the following debug output:

System

Any ideas? (This used to work, recent upgrade of something must have
caused this. I also tried this as root, same thing.

Have you tried ?

Code: Select all

*  app-cdr/dvdrtools [ Masked ]
      Latest version available: 0.3.1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 844 kB

Description: A fork of cdrtools, including DVD support.
      License: GPL-2
Do you hear the sound of inevitability?

I got the very same problem in AMD64. My installed package versions are the same, also.

Why should I install the masked dvdrtools when k3b is emerged with dvdr support (I'm just asking, not arguing ;) ):

Code: Select all

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] app-cdr/k3b-0.12.14 USE="alsa arts css dvdr encode ffmpeg flac hal kde mp3 musepack musicbrainz sndfile vcd vorbis -debug -xinerama" 0 kB
I don't get it. If dvdrtools are needed, why doen't k3b take it as a dependency? And, why is it masked?

Thanks.

Try running this before you burn:

Code: Select all

ulimit -l unlimited
Worked for me with the exact same error message from growisofs. Reference

I've had the same or similar problem. It couldn't burn dvd's and cd's -rw. unmerged k3b and now I'am using cdrecord from command line. It seems that it is only option for me to burn cd's and dvd's with gentoo. Unfortunately I didn't know that I can burn dvd's with cdrecord and spend a lot of time trying growisofs, cdrecord-ProDVD and dvdrecord. None has worked, except cdrecord as I mentioned.

Try

Code: Select all

localhost chris # emerge -a =app-cdr/dvd+rw-tools-6.0
downgrading to dvd+rw-tools-6.0.

I found this solution in this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-43 ... -mmap.html. It worked for me.

It seams I have the same problem but I could not solve it downgrading to dvd+rw-tools-6.0.
I would like to try to burn directly with cdrecord but I get error.
Sorry if I ask your support for this but
what is the exact command?

thx

I'm having the same problem with my amd64 pc.

Here's my output:
emerge -a dvdrtools

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "dvdrtools" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-cdr/dvdrtools-0.3.1 (masked by: package.mask, ~amd64 keyword)
# Lars Weiler <pylon@gentoo.org> (08 Jul 2006)
# Use app-cdr/cdrtools for DVD burning (yes, it can do it now).

- app-cdr/dvdrtools-0.1.6 (masked by: package.mask)
- app-cdr/dvdrtools-0.3.0-r1 (masked by: package.mask, ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/dvdrtools-0.2.1 (masked by: package.mask)

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
So looks like we'll be using cdrtools for burning dvds

Yukimura--

That's right, you don't need dvdrtools. Did you notice that my post referred to app-cdr/dvd+rw-tools ? It is a dependency of k3b.

"I would like to try to burn directly with cdrecord but I get error. "

This is what I use:

For dvd rw
cdrecord dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 speed=4 driveropts=burnfree -sao /home/d3n/Desktop/JavaTut.iso

For cd rw:
cdrecord dev=b,t,l -sao blank=fast -v xx.iso

Blanking DVD-RW
cdrecord dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 speed=4 driveropts=burnfree -sao blank=fast

check "HOWTO ATAPI CD Burning" in gentoo wiki.

Yes, I've noticed that, but I'll first try using cdrtools, if it won't work I'll do it your way. :)

Well 'cdrecord -scanbus' gives me '0,0,0 0) 'ATA ' 'WDC WD2500JD-00H' '08.0' Disk'. And again I use ATAPI instead of ATA and it works. Yes, I noticed that if I want to burn cd than I can not use that option, instead i type dev=/dev/hda or dev=b,t,l.

Installing the unstable version of dvd+rw-tools (7.0) took care of this problem for me.

Have you tried with different kernel? You could also try some other tools. check this wiki article:

It did the same for me. Apparently the ulimit -l unlimited also works if you want to continue using the stable (6.1) version of dvd+rw-tools instead of the unstable 7.0 version. The 7.0 version seems to work fine on my machine though.
Unix is user friendly- it is just picky who its friends are.

I argue it's an hardware problem.
Sorry for the time you lost to help me.
I'll repair the hardware and see if the problem is still there.

Just a little addition to the thread....

I had issues burning DVDs in K3B originally.. my solution was to go to
Settings -> Configure K3B -> Advanced -> Manually Writing Buffer Size -> 2MB

Might help some of you, might not.
...And then stuff happened.
