Look into the host.conf documentation, it is saying there is an error with '`mdns off' ' Is that the correct syntax?

Did you try disabling pango?
Which version of Firefox? Did it work fine before an upgrade?
Does that font work fine in other programs?

They got rid of the mdns line a while ago, if I remember correctly. Currently, my host.conf has no such line, and I'm fairly certain I had to get rid of it after some base system upgrade.

Also, try moving the ~/.mozilla directory to somewhere else (to get rid of any configuration things) or log in as another regular user and see if firefox works then.
