Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.
I am trying to install Gentoo on one Core2 Duo computer. I downloaded install-x86-minimal-2006.0.iso and made a CD from it. The installation started with loading some packages and mounting the CD devices. But then it reports "!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!". After that it prompts for keymap selection. Finally the installation gives the warning "!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected. Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell". The motherboard is a ASUS P5B. The IDE devices are controlled by the RAID Module and uses JMicro for IDE DVD Rom and IDE Hard Drives. The Problem is that at the bootup from the CD the bootloader doesent get that its an IDE Device. What can i do. Im a newbie to Linux.
Look in your BIOS and see if your SATA controller has any options such as Enhanced or Compatiability mode. If it has Compatability mode, change to that. Then, your CD should be recognized.
Windows = a 32-bit extension to a 16-bit graphical shell for an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
It does have these options and i tried it the way you described it. It still doesnt work and the only difference is that instead of /dev/sda it now says /dev/hda. Any more ideas
The only way that other people have gotten it to work on the P5B motherboard is to use a USB CD drive.

@CompNerd:
is there some performance impact with this option? (e.g. pio mode ?)
... for me it unfortunately didn't work
@DeathWolf:
wenn du willst, kannst du ja mal meine livecd ausprobieren, damit dürfte es bei dir mit dem booten klappen
falls nicht, kannst du ja unter diesem thread antworten ... (hab den controller auch)
Well, in theory, yes, since it means that you cant take advantage of any controller specific feature. However, there really is no performance loss (or so it seemed to me).
