Kernel Panic

Post by questionaire » Tue May 02, 2006 3:57 am

Hi there,

i'm new to gentoo and currently want to try to install it from a minimum install 2006.0 cd on my small pIII 868MHz.
At first i had a problem with my pc hanging up while trying to mount the minimum cd at hdb/.
i fixed that with the boot parameter "gentoo ide=nodma"

but know, when its auto scrambling the root password i get a kernel panic:
"<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt"

anyone got any ideas? everything would help me.

thanks in advance, me

questionaire,

First, welcome to Gentoo, even if it is a bit of a shaky start.

There are several boot options you can try. They are all explained on the F2 or F3 help screens when the CD is at the boot prompt.
Press F2 and/or F3 to read and stop the auto start feature.

noapic may be a good one to start with, turning off power management is also a good idea.
Regards,

hi there :)

now i tried following things:
- memtest: no error
- re-downloading the minimum file: md5 ok
- re-burning the cd at 2x speed: ok
- booting with params: gentoo ide=nodma noapic doscsi

still same error :(
i don't think that downloading a 800mb file will solve my problem, or? what shall i do now?! never thought that gentoo is that tricky o_O

You may want to try a previous release just to see if it works. Sometimes regression happens. Try like 2005.1 Please fill a bug report if it does work.

If that doesn't work just use Knoppix to install it, instructions

If Knoppix & gentoo live CD's don't work you have hardware issues.

Good luck. BTW save your self some money and use cdrw's

Oh if it does work just continue on with the instructions there is no fundamental difference and everything will come out exactly the same.

http://www.innova-studios.com/gentoo.jpg

i really don't know where the problem could be!

system configuration:
p3 868MHz
512MB Ram
2xHDD (1x1.19GB IDE, 1x4.09GB SCSI)
no special graphiccard, no special soundcard ...

currently i try it installing SuSE Linux 8.2 professional - no problem ...

Your problem, if it is still a problem, sound very much like the one solved in this thread
