Screen after boot, and halt/poweroff/shutdown/reboot[SOLVED]

I made quite a big emerge update couple of days ago, and faced several problems. Now most of them have been fixed, but there are still two persistent problems. Neither of these two problems has occured before the emerge, and I suspect that the problems have something to do with configuration files, but I have no clue what to try. It would be great if someone could help me on these.

The first problem is that when kdm starts after boot and asks for user name and password, I cannot see the question if I don't first switch the monitor off and then again on. Without this, the screen is first mostly black, and then starts to turn whte. After the on/off everything works well in KDE.

...except that I cannot reboot, halt, shutdown or poweroff. These won't work even if I log as root on console. When I try one of these, the computer shuts down KDE (I quess), screen turns to black but no poweroff/reboot. I know that there are several threads about these reboot problems, but reading those has not provided any solution.

I have KDE 3.4.3, AMD Athlon, kernel 2.6.15, LG Flatron L1730P, and ATI Radeon. Can anyone give a tip or two how to try to solve these problems?

I don't know much about kdm, but what does the computer say when you try to shut down the computer while logged in as root at a terminal?

Thanks for your reply. When I tried to shutdown from command line, it said "kernel bug" etc. Later I understood that the problem was somehow connected to ati-drivers and agp, and I started using the generic radeon driver. Also recompiled kernel with more "normal" options. Now everyting works fine (although I don't have ati's direct rendering...), and I even just found a thread about this problem: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-43 ... ivers.html. Couldn't find that before... It would be nice if there where some kind of useful index of these problems.
