automatic device recognition?

On some distros, if I insert a CD, the OS will drop an icon on my desktop or if i insert a usb mem stick, itll drop another icon. how do i set something like that up on gentoo? i already use autofs, but i thought the whole icon thing is cool. also, is there any way to have certain devices always map to a certain item in /dev (for example, my ipod always gets /dev/sdb or my mem key always gets /dev/sdc)... id imagine thats probably a udev config.

If you're running KDE, dbus and hal is what you need. Take a look at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_D-BUS%2C_H ... DE_media:/

As for gnome, I believe a search on gnome-volume-manager would provide some insight.
