I want to set up my AMD Box as a central programming workstation and svn server etc. I develop in many languages including but not limited to Obj-C, Ruby, Java. I want to be able to have a nice environment to program in as well as have a stable server backend to host a svn repo as well as some rails code and web development. How is the eclipse support in gentoo?

ATI x1600 Mobility
In gentoo is better to grab Eclipse from the original site and install it where you want, nothing else, than you can manage all the plugin directly from the Eclipse Update Manager. The Eclipse ebuilds are outdate.
Worse, there's no desire to update the Eclipse build by the maintainers. I've seen several posts on bugzilla and here in the forums to just rely on the Eclipse updater. Might as well just grab the tarball and put it in /opt or /usr/local in that case.
I can confirm that there are problems withe the portage version. The lastest ruby plugin doesn't work, nor does the server component of radrails. I'm using the binary version, and it works fine now.
